Hand embroidered silk thread on hand-loomed orange khaddar. This is an old piece, with obvious signs of use and small areas of patching. Northern India.
Spectacular Phulkari shawls formed an important part of the dowry of a new bride and were started early in a girl's life. Women and girls traditionally gather to embroider as they sing and learn from their elders the traditional motifs. This important social tradition of common work is called trinjhan. Two or three pieces are then assembled to create a shawl.
