Glycolic acid occurs naturally as a trace component in sugar cane, which is the source of our glycolic acid, and some other fruits. Once applied, the acid first weakens the binding properties of the lipids that hold the dead skin cells together; this allows the outer skin, namely the horny coat, to dissolve revealing the underlying skin.
